Clarinets comprise a family of instruments of differing size and pitches. The clarinet family is the largest such windwood family, with more than a dozen types, ranging from the BB♭ contrabase to the A ♭ soprano. Of these, many are rare or obsolete, and music written for them is usually played by the common types. The unmodified word clarinet usualy refers to the B♭ sprano clarinet, by far the most popular clarinet.
In todays music, the clarinet is most commonly used in jazz and classical emsembles, in chamber groups, and as a solo instrument.
Some of the different types of clarinet include:
- Alto clarinet
- Bass clarinet
- Basset clarinet
- Clarinet d'amour
- Contro-alto clarinet
- Contrabass clarinet
- Piccolo clarinet (A ♭ clarinet)
- Soprano clarinet
- Octocontra-alto clarinet
- Octocontrabass clarinet
