Would you like to significantly increase your brain and heart health? How about if I told you that certain foods can decrease your risk of getting cancer? You probably can't wait to learn about these superfoods! These tremendous health benefits can be attributed to three types of essential fatty acids. Essential fatty acids are the good fats that your body needs, but cannot produce on its own. With that being said, it is a wise decision to supplement your diet with these fatty acids.
These essential fatty acids fall under the umbrella of a group known as omega-3's. Studies show that omega-3 fatty acids help prevent heart disease, lower triglycerides, and reduce inflammation. These essential fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain, and are of the utmost importance in normal brain and eye development. I mentioned that the term "omega-3's" are sort of a blanket term. There are actually three types of omega-3's, these include DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid), ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid). The most important of the three are DHA and EPA.
If you are like most people, you are only getting a fraction of the omega-3's that your body needs to ward off disease and maintain a healthy brain and heart. Some excellent sources of these essential fatty acids are and fresh, frozen, or canned fatty fish like salmon, rainbow trout, and sardines. Many foods in your grocery store are now enchanced with the essential fatty acids, check the labels on milk, yogurts, cheese, eggs, and pasta. Choose foods that have added EPA and DHA. And if you don't necessarily like fish or you are vegetarian, you can find fish oil supplements at many online shops and retail health food stores. As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Omega-3's are a very essential means of prevention in the long run.
