Pet shops provide diverse selections of pets and pet products. Apart from the cliché image of a puppy in the window display, today's pet shops house aquariums filled with all types of exotic and colourful fish, reptiles, various species of birds, and small animals such as rodents, hamsters, rabbits, and degus. Although not all individual pet shops have the facilities for this ideal image, local pet shops usually have the most popular pets available for sale: cats, dogs, and gold fish.

Pets themselves are not the only focus: pet shops fully understand and appreciate the need for long-term care. In an effort to ensure comfortable homes for pets, pet shops stock important pet merchandise.
